Fizzing bath salts are a fun item to make yourself! Pamper yourself for super cheap or make gifts for friends and family.

Fizzing bath salts fizz because of a neutralization reaction between the base sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and the acid citric acid. This reaction occurs when the salts are poured into water. The acid and base are distributed throughout the water and chemically react with one another to produce carbon dioxide which produces the bubbles.

The main ingredients you will need are: Citric acid, baking soda, epsom salts and cornstarch.

The citric acid and baking soda are the key reaction ingredients, so why the epsom salts and cornstarch?

Corn starch helps to absorb moisture int he air and keeps the citric acid and baking soda from reacting with one another before you sprinkle them into water. Epsom salts are excellent for sore muscles and helping you detox while you soak in the tub.

So how do we turn these easy to find ingredients (Bulk Barn carries all of them) into fun bath salts?

The general rule of thumb is 1 part citric acid: 1 part epsom salts: 1 part corn starch: 2 parts baking soda. I’m not providing a unit of measure because you can choose that yourself. You could use 1/2 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/2 cup, 1 cup for a large volume or use teaspoons or tablespoons for a smaller volume.

Once you’ve mixed together your base ingredients you can get creative by adding fun additives! Add a few drops of an all natural food colouring to change up the colour. Add a few drops of essential oils for scent and you can also add dried flowers to make them look fancy.

Package them up in a mason jar to keep them safe from humidity in the air.

Use in a foot bath by putting 2 tbsp into a basin of hot water and soaking your feet. Or use 1/2 cup in the tub.

We hope you have fun getting creative!
